Birdsong
Tomorrow is going to be the *official!* first day of spring...
...and it's expected to snow tonight.
That's nice. ARGH. Though to be technical, although most people just accept the vernal equinox - that's March 20th - as the first day, was off reading something here in The Guardian, and one of the commenters mentioned that Imbolc (February 1st or 2nd) should be the first day of spring.
...Obviously this person has never been to Des Moines. Spring my arse, at the beginning of February. More like the deadest of the dead of winter.
Can't say that this winter's been shorter than the previous one - apparently before I arrived here for the first time in January 2009, it had already started snowing in late November. This winter that's ending began proper in early to mid-December - I remember being properly snowy and chilly during finals week last sem, which was right smack in the middle of December.
Snow's finally all gone here, but not much bloomin'. Last year spring break was sunny and warm - I was in three-quarters and shorts!!! - but this year's just a few days, windy, and still below 10 C most of the time. And no flowers yet, grass is still sparse on the ground, and forecast says it's going to snow tonight. NGOR HO ANGRY AH!
But the little birds are back, and was out barbequing (oheys, Firefox is American; what it corrected my spelling of 'barbeque' to 'barbecue') with friends yesterday evening. Still cool though, especially with the wind. But the birds are back, and so's the ducks and the geese or some fowl thingies what I can't distinguish cos I really don't know liddat.
Anyways, spent Sunday to Tuesday in Minnesota. Shopping, Mall of America, skiing and hunting for tiramisu. And we spent some time lost too...Minnesota has lots of farms. Lots of it. Acres and acres of bare dark earth and some buildings in the distance. They'll be pretty when things are growing, or maybe in summer and fall, but now they're just dead. Oh and there was that giant cherry in the park across the road from the Walker Art Center.

And lots of good Chinese food. With seafood. Bliss.
It's going to be the first day of spring and I'm listening to Noah and the Whale's The First Days of Spring. Why the sadness, Charlie Fink?
It may be spring, with things growing, but oh the expectations. And the bloody wind.

And they call this art. Don't question it.
