Achy breaky feet

Public transport in KL wasn't too bad. But the Monorail was too packed...doesn't make sense, to think that people only have one option to get around KL quickly and conveniently. Lots of buses, but of course, you can only read in trains. =)

Now. Neil Gaiman. I don't know whether to hate him or love his work. Smoke and Mirrors is good, very good. The twists in the stories were really unexpected - and macabre, with the blood, gore, perversion of sense and logic, and occasionally (since this anthology is meant for adults), sex definitely filed under HORROR, not fantasy.

He ruined Narnia for me. Still...C. S. Lewis gave a disappointing ending (what philosophy?!), and if you're one of those people who prefer twisted fantasies, then yes, Gaiman's ending would satisfy you - and shock and disgust, maybe. His story was an old one, The Problem of Susan, so if you do get the chance to read it, then do so, for the alternative happy ending. If you prefer your stories nice and untainted, then don't. Don't EVER read it; it'll ruined everything after that.

In this new anthology, he decided to twist the whole story of Snow White into pure horror (and, unfortunately, questionable sex). I'm halfway between regret and awe after reading his version of the fairy tale. I didn't like the Disney version, but this was a bit too...much.

The fact that the hag of a wicked witch murdered Snow White? Don't believe it.

The portrayal of Snow White as an innocent, pure-hearted girl? Nonsense.

Did you like the prince in the Disney movie? Then don't.

Because in Gaiman's universe, anything is possible; all your dreams can and do come true. And when I say all your dreams, I mean it: the guilty fantasies, the unspoken hopes, the surreal out-of-body experiences...and all your nightmares, even the ones you thought you have forgotten long ago.
