Miscellany
Right. It's been an interesting week.
Budget 2008! Free education for everyone! And I just missed out =/ why lah I skipped. Missed the switch to English, and now the free education. And if that isn't enough, the government doesn't even realise that there ARE students who would be in college or Form 6 already at the age of 17. Not fair. Seems that only a few unlucky people have been in the news for trying to evade NS and getting caught. I can choose not to go, but it doesn't seem fair that I wasn't given the chance earlier straight after SPM all because of my age.
Times Warehouse Sale this week till the 16th! Chin Lei alerted me about it earlier...and then I dozed off in the afternoon and just woke up. So no go. Should have stayed awake - if I go next week, the best books would be taken dah. Shame that I missed the most recent Big Bookshop one, because the first one I went was really really good, much better than MPH ones in previous years.
Reading Krauss's first novel, Man Walks Into A Room now. Language as fluid as in The History of Love; how does she do it? Anyway, this first story is about a Samson Greene, who went missing for several days and was found in the Nevada desert with no idea of who he is. Doctors found a tumour in his brain, operated successfully, and Samson woke up to find that all his memories after the age of 12 have been erased. He's a special case, because like a doctor said, he has the memories of a 12-year-old but the intelligence of a 36-year-old man, his real age. His wife Anna tries to help him to remember, but he really has no idea of what happened during those 24 years; he can't even remember why he fell in love with her. She tries to help him to return to his old life, but I realised that maybe, Samson has not only lost his memories of his old life, but he doesn't want it back. Anna - understandably - is really disappointed with this, and they split after the first part of the book. I...skipped to the ending, and yep, Samson's got a new life. It almost seemed at first that he and Anna would be getting back together, but their last attempt to patch things back didn't work out. Maybe it was for the better that they separated, because Samson didn't want her - didn't understand why he wanted her earlier.
Very interesting premise. Lose all your memory and wake up to find that people still want your old self back, but you have no idea who you were, and why you did the things you did. And you have obviously changed, because all your everyday habits would be lost along with the memories, making you a whole new person, who seems the same but isn't...and then there's the memory transfer part somewhere through the book, but it didn't interest me as the whole getting-your-life back idea.
Anyway, go get it if you liked History. History was more unconventional though, and somewhat more emotional, but Krauss's style can be addictive (for me lah).
Short semester already started. No time to fool around and relax; you have the same subjects four times a week. Lecturers hardly let up, it's "finish your work on time or else", and my Accounts lecturer is crazy. Homework every day, and most people in the class have only taken Accounts way back in Form 3 for PMR. She doesn't seem to be getting her point across that effectively...
Rugby World Cup right now eh. Italy's currently getting trashed by NZ now. Watched my first rugby match during the '98 Commonwealth Games in the rugby stadium in PJ, it was Malaysia against NZ. No surprises who won - the Malaysians were all so small, about two men to one New Zealander. Remember the last World Cup? The whole hype over England. Now it doesn't seem to be getting much attention, maybe because rugby isn't a popular sport here.
Watched a few minutes of the Kedah-Perak football match with my parents. Father was laughing his head off. The players have lots to work on their skills...erm, is it any wonder why the Malaysian team lost so badly in the Asian Cup?
Has anyone realised how EASY it is to climb the Seri Selangor boundary walls? The walls facing the field have already been graffitied - every time I pass there it's like someone's been adding to the graffiti quite methodically, and nobody seems to realise it yet. Or they don't want to pay extra for the paint job. And now they're building fences on the SMK USJ 4 side...what happens to PJ then?
My sister just got another Spongebob Squarepants huggy doll. Wonder what's with the new obsession. Came home from a shopping trip with friends today and dumped the yellow fella on my face while I was sleeping.
Brat.
